Nestled among the farmland of the Vienne department of western France, Angles-sur-l’Anglin is a delightful village that captivates from the moment of arrival due to the prominent castle ruins. Recognised as one of the ‘Plus Beaux Villages de France’ (Most Beautiful Villages of France), Angles-sur-l’Anglin is a perfect day trip, or a relaxed summer vacation spot.
Where is Angles sur l’Anglin?
Angles-sur-l’Anglin is located in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of western France. It lies on the Anglin River, about 50 kilometers northeast of Poitiers. Positioned between the regional parks of Brenne and La Brenne, so it is good for nature-lovers.

- Saint-Savin and the UNESCO World Heritage abbey
- The medieval city of Chauvigny, with 5 fortifications sitting on a rocky hill in the town: the Château des Évêques (11th century), the Château d’Harcourt (13th century), the Château de Montléon (13th century), the Keep of Gouzon (12th and 13th centuries) and the Tower of Flins (12th century)
- The city of Poitiers, with historic sites such as Notre-Dame la Grande, and the Plantagenet Palace of Poitiers.
- La Ferme Musée Acadienne – historic houses built for the Acadians after the Le Grand Dérangement in Canada.

The Fortress of Angles
Like much of France, Angles-sur-l’Anglin has a rich and interesting history. The village’s name is derived from the Angles tribe, a Germanic people who settled in the region during the early Middle Ages. The strategic location of the village, perched on a rocky outcrop above the Anglin River, made it an ideal site for settlement and defense.
One of the most striking historical landmarks in Angles-sur-l’Anglin is the Château d’Angles. This imposing fortress, whose ruins still dominate the village, was built in the 11th century. The château played a significant role throughout the medieval period, witnessing numerous conflicts and sieges. Today, visitors can explore the remnants of the castle and enjoy stepping back in time in these ancient walls.
TIP: You can climb the steps at the upper end of the castle ruins, to the old chapel, for free. This affords an incredible view over the town and river.
Roc-aux-Sorciers
Beyond its medieval history, Angles-sur-l’Anglin is renowned for its prehistoric treasures. The Roc-aux-Sorciers, located at the top end of ‘Haut Ville’ (the upper village), is a remarkable archaeological site featuring intricate rock carvings dating back to the Magdalenian period (around 14,000 years ago).
These carvings, depicting animals and human figures, provide valuable insights into the lives and beliefs of our prehistoric ancestors.
The site is often referred to as the ‘Sistine Chapel of Prehistory’ due to the quality and detail of the artwork. A visit to the Roc-aux-Sorciers is a fascinating journey back in time and an opportunity to connect with the region’s ancient past.

Picturesque Town Passageways
One of the features of Angles-sur-l’Anglin is its network of passageways, or ‘venelles,’ that weave through the village. These narrow, winding paths connect the main streets with hidden courtyards, gardens, and viewpoints, offering a glimpse into the village’s past and a sense of discovery for visitors.
Walking through these passageways, you can find charming nooks and crannies, each with its own story to tell, and experience the village’s intimate and inviting atmosphere. The historic paths have informational signs to guide you.
Natural Wonders
The natural surroundings of Angles-sur-l’Anglin are as captivating as its historical and cultural heritage. The Anglin River meanders through the village, offering opportunities for kayaking, fishing, and picnicking along its banks. The river’s gentle flow and the lush greenery that lines its course create a serene and picturesque setting.
For those who enjoy hiking, the area around Angles-sur-l’Anglin offers numerous trails that lead through forests and along the river. These trails provide breathtaking views of the countryside and are a great way to enjoy the natural beauty of the region.
In the summer, you can rent kayaks from the south side of the bridge and enjoy Angle from on the Anglin River.
Restaurants in Angles sur l’Anglin
We enjoyed a lovely meal at the Donjon de Bacchus restaurant overlooking the back of the fortress. A simple menu, with traditional steak frites, burgers, and various rotisserie meats with vegetables or salad. You dine here for a solid brasserie lunch and impeccable views. The staff are delightful too, and will try some english with you if you need it. It is a tourist town, after all.
There are some lovely restaurants on the square in Haut-Ville, as well as one down in Basse-Ville too. So, you really do have a choice of dining in Angles, despite the tiny size of the town.
Views
My favourite views were from the bridge, with the town and the fortress behind; and from the chapel above the fortress. These two views provide such picturesque and layered photograph opportunities – dynamism, height, a mix of architecture and greenery, and the marvellous chateau / fortress. The winding Anglin River adds to any view in this town.
There is a lookout at the opposite site of the upper town, which looks over the bridge, river and up to the fortress on the left. It is labelled as ‘Vue du belvédère’ on maps.
The cute road along the river under the bridge is a great way to see the 1598 Donjon house up close, with its amazing tower.

Be aware, in the summer, Angles is a popular tourist spot. So expect crowds, especially on weekends.
